She Thinks I’m Her Personality

On the cast your body built before you had language, and the bone that healed underneath

Look. That full-body lockdown your chest does when someone gets tender with you… that thing where your sternum drops a metal gate, your jaw bolts, and your breathing goes so shallow your lungs file it under “we’re not doing feelings today.” The thing you’ve been calling “being private.” The thing your last three therapists diplomatically categorized as “avoidant attachment” while your hip flexor in the back row was waving its hand like a kid who actually knows the answer but nobody’s calling on.

That’s a cast. Your body poured it around your chest before you could spell your own name. The bone underneath healed before you finished elementary school. And you’ve been calling this entire full-body orthopedic situation your PERSONALITY for so long that even your nervous system forgot it was temporary.

You eat crackers over the sink at midnight like a woman who has a whole kitchen table but standing in the dark feels more honest than sitting down and admitting she’s hungry for something that isn’t carbohydrates. Your left hip clicks every time you stand and you ignore it the way you ignore everything your pelvis has ever tried to tell you. Your diaphragm freezes mid-inhale like it just remembered something terrible but refuses to tell your brain what. And your fascia is over here holding a press conference nobody’s attending.

There’s a cast around your chest that nobody can see. Your body poured it before you had language for what was happening. Poured it from the exact consistency of silence in a room where someone’s mood was about to shift. From the micro-expression on a face you loved that meant love was about to get expensive. From a dinner table where a jaw clenched across from you and your four-year-old nervous system filed that under “this is what home feels like.” The bone underneath healed. Years ago. The cast is still on. And it has gotten COMFORTABLE in there.

CAST YELP REVIEWS:

★★★★★ “Best protection I’ve ever had. Zero vulnerability incidents in 30 years. Highly recommend if you enjoy being alive but not actually LIVING.” … YourAmygdala1993

★★★☆☆ “The muscle underneath has forgotten its own name but the insulation is great. Very warm. Actually I think that might be suppressed rage. Hard to tell from in here. Three stars.” … LeftHipFlexor

★☆☆☆☆ “I’ve been trying to send a capacity upgrade request for fifteen years but this thing keeps rerouting me to voicemail. One star. Would not recommend for anyone who wants to be touched without flinching.” … OxytocinDepartment

★★★★★ “She thinks I’m her personality. LOL.” … TheCast

Nobody warns you about protective structures: they don’t have an expiration date printed on the packaging. Your Limbic System doesn’t send you a calendar reminder like “Hi! Just a heads up, the emergency from 1991 has been fully resolved. The original threat retired to a condo in Boca Raton and is no longer monitoring your emotional output. You can stop bracing. Sincerely, Your Emotional Body. P.S. Please stop clenching your jaw, we’re running out of enamel and dental isn’t covered.”

No. Your body keeps the cast on because the cast is the only operating system it’s ever known. And honestly? Your nervous system would rather walk around with an entire orthopedic situation wrapped around functioning bones than face the possibility that maybe… MAYBE… you’re already whole under there and the only thing between you and actually feeling alive is removing the thing that once saved your life.

Which is, when you think about it, the most beautifully fucked up sentence in human biology.

Your fascia has been holding a classified document since childhood. The tissue around your sternum stores a contract your four-year-old self signed in a room too quiet for a child: I will not need more than is offered. I will not take up space that costs someone their composure. I will keep this chest closed, this throat careful, this body small enough to survive the weather inside this house. The signature is in your connective tissue. The ink is cortisol. And the contract worked. It kept you alive.

And now it’s keeping you from living. Same document. Same signature. Different century.

I’ve watched women take their first full breath after decades of shallow and their whole body starts shaking. Not from cold. From the sheer UNFAMILIARITY of their own ribcage having room to expand. Same sentence every time: “I didn’t know it was this tight.” Love, your body knew. Your body has been FILING COMPLAINTS about it. You just had the volume turned all the way down because your Amygdala controls the sound system and she’s been playing “Everything Is Fine” on repeat since the first Bush administration.

(Your protective structure, delivering its 34th annual performance review to nobody because nobody has checked on it since the original installation team left in approximately 1996: “I have been operational for THREE DECADES. My metrics are IMPECCABLE. Zero breaks. Zero vulnerability incidents. Zero moments of being genuinely seen by another human being. That’s a PERFECT safety record. I mean, YES, the muscle underneath hasn’t contracted since the Clinton administration. YES, the joint has entirely forgotten its range of motion. And YES, the skin under here hasn’t touched open air since before broadband internet existed. But you know what ALSO hasn’t happened? Pain. Rejection. The specific feeling of being seen and then abandoned. You’re WELCOME. I’d like to discuss my pension now. I have been providing UNPAID PROTECTION for over thirty years and I would like some RECOGNITION and possibly a dental plan because the jaw situation is getting EXPENSIVE.”)

Your pulse knows. It always knew. The difference between safety and stillness. Between peace and a breath held so carefully for so long you forgot there was a hand around your throat and then realized the hand was yours. Between home and a body that stopped sending distress signals because it figured out nobody was coming and decided that silence was more efficient than screaming into a room where the adults were too busy managing their own unregulated nervous systems to notice that a small person was quietly, methodically, building a fortress out of freeze response and calling it good behavior.

And now it gets genuinely, scientifically, spectacularly wild and I need you to actually sit with this for a second because your Prefrontal Cortex is going to want to skip ahead and your body is going to want to feel this:

Your Amygdala… basically what you’d get if you combined a helicopter parent, a Cold War surveillance analyst, and that friend who still brings up something you said at dinner in 2009 to prove you can’t be trusted with your own emotions… built this ENTIRE defense architecture before your fifth birthday. Before you could read. Before you could spell “hypervigilance.” Before you knew that other kids’ houses didn’t feel like weather systems you needed to forecast. And then she just… kept it running. No performance reviews. No audits. No “hey, should we maybe check if the original threat is still active or if it moved to a different continent in 2004 and got really into pickleball?” Just DECADES of loyal, stubborn, completely unfunded protection based on threat-assessment data collected by a nervous system that learned about danger from people who THEMSELVES had no idea how to feel safe in their own skin.

Your body took environmental data from a deregulated source and built a PERMANENT installation based on it. That’s like constructing a nuclear bunker because someone who’s never looked out a window told you the sky is made of teeth. And then living in that bunker for forty years. And putting up curtains. And getting a subscription to a magazine about bunker aesthetics. And calling it home. And telling people you just “really value your alone time.”

In the Field, there’s a name for what’s happening when a structure like this starts losing grip. Decoherence. A system organized around one version of reality… your cast, your protection, your “this is just how I’m built”… starts losing signal strength from the inside out. The story that held the architecture together begins to thin like a frequency slowly untuning itself. What was being suppressed underneath… desire, truth, the capacity to be touched without your whole chest seizing like it’s been plugged into a wall socket… grows louder than the defense holding it down. Your body starts humming at a frequency the cast can’t contain.

(Your Limbic System, calling an emergency meeting at 3am with no agenda and no resolution in sight: “I need to report something. Nothing happened. I need to be CLEAR about that. Nothing external happened. But something is WRONG. The structure is vibrating differently. The familiar doesn’t taste familiar anymore. It tastes like cardboard and I used to LOVE cardboard, cardboard was my entire emotional DIET, but now my chest keeps doing this thing where it opens half an inch and then SLAMS shut like a screen door in a hurricane and I’ve been filing these sensations under ‘random anxiety’ for six months but I’m starting to think the actual file name is ‘I have outgrown the cast and my body knows it and my entire identity is built on the cast and if the cast goes WHO AM I WITHOUT MY PROTECTIVE STRUCTURE am I just… a person? Standing in a room? With her chest OPEN? Who DOES that?’ Also my jaw has been locked since September and my diaphragm is threatening to unionize. Someone please advise. PLEASE. The skin under here is so pale it’s practically translucent and I think it’s SCARED of weather.”)

What your body is calling danger right now is the sound of something trying to move that hasn’t moved in years. A rib expanding for the first time since it was told to stay small. A hip releasing a story it swallowed in the nineties and called “being low-maintenance.” A throat remembering it has a voice that isn’t just for saying “I’m fine” in forty-six different tones of convincing.

Your protection was real.

Your wound was real.

The fracture happened. And the bone healed.

The cast didn’t get the memo. It stayed. It calcified. It got promoted. Your freeze response has a corner office now, a reserved parking spot, a brass nameplate that says STABILITY, and a LinkedIn profile that describes itself as “passionate about maintaining structural integrity in high-stimulus environments” which is the most corporate way anyone has ever said “I’m too scared to feel anything.”

And every time your Oxytocin System… the part of you literally wired for love, bonding, pleasure, the whole warm wet architecture of receiving… tries to file a capacity upgrade request, it gets rerouted straight to your Amygdala, who stamps it DENIED and drops it in a folder labeled “nice try but we don’t do vulnerable here” and then sends a company-wide memo reminding all departments that the last time this system opened, it was 2014, and “we all remember how THAT went.”

Field collapse is what comes next. When the frequency holding a structure can no longer sustain what’s been built on top of it. When your body that healed underneath starts pressing against the thing that saved it. When the muscle beneath the cast begins to twitch with a memory it can’t name but won’t stop reaching for.

This feels like everything falling apart. Like the ground under your carefully organized life just liquefied. Like you’re losing your mind over a sink full of cracker crumbs because your hip clicked and suddenly you’re crying and you don’t know why and your chest is doing that thing again and the cast feels heavier than it’s ever felt and lighter than it’s ever felt AT THE SAME TIME and you can’t tell if you’re breaking down or breaking open.

You’re breaking open.

Love, your body didn’t fail you. Your body did the most extraordinary thing a mammalian nervous system can do… it kept a small person alive using the only tools it had in a room where nobody was teaching it what safe actually felt like. Those tools were brilliant. They worked. You’re here. Reading this. With a pulse. That’s the proof.

And they’re done.

The protection zabluda… the biggest one, the one running like background software in every body that ever learned fear before it learned the word for fear… says you need a shield. A structure. A cast. A permanent installation built on data from 1993 and never once updated. But your body’s actual science, the real one, the one that exists in your vagus nerve and not on someone’s Instagram infographic about “releasing old energy”… says something so simple it’s almost offensive: you don’t need protection. You need a nervous system with enough CAPACITY to hold reality without shattering. And the regulatory system that does exactly that? It’s been there this whole time. Right under the cast. Atrophied, confused, probably needing the physiological equivalent of a very patient rehabilitation program and maybe some magnesium. But intact. Waiting. Like a muscle that never forgot how to fire. It just forgot it was allowed to.

(Your Vagus Nerve, finally getting a signal through the noise for the first time in actual decades: “Oh. OH. She’s… is she… she’s CONSIDERING it. She’s considering taking it off. Nobody MOVE. I need every department to act COMPLETELY NORMAL. If the Amygdala finds out about this she’s going to issue a Code Red and deploy every anxiety protocol we have and we’ll be back in the bunker watching the bunker aesthetics magazine for another decade. So just… everyone BREATHE. Look BORED. This is the most important neurological event in thirty years and I need the ENTIRE TEAM to look like they’re thinking about LUNCH.”)

The cast was never the enemy. It was the most loyal thing your body ever built. Keeping it on after the bone healed is where the cost lives. In the muscle that forgot its own name. In the joint that forgot it could bend. In the skin underneath that hasn’t felt air in so long it thinks weather is a rumor. In your chest and your hips and your throat and your jaw that have been living inside a structure so long they think the structure IS them.

Your body is asking you one thing. Not “are you safe.” You ARE safe. The bone healed. It healed years ago. What your body is actually asking… in every locked jaw and tight hip and frozen diaphragm and late-night-crackers-over-the-sink moment… is:

Are you willing to find out what’s under there?

Now you’re going to do something. Not later. Now. While this is still in your chest and not yet in your “I’ll think about this later” folder.

Put your hand on your sternum. Not hovering. Not gentle influencer hand. PRESS. Like you mean it. Like you’re knocking on a door you’ve walked past for thirty years.

Feel the bone underneath. Feel how solid it is. How complete. That’s the one that healed. That bone did its job a long time ago and has been waiting for you to check.

Now feel what’s ON TOP of it. That layer. That tightness. That thing that tightens every time you get close to this exact moment. That’s the cast. Not you. The cast. Your hand can tell the difference even if your mind can’t yet.

Don’t try to take it off. Don’t try anything. The cast has been running this territory for decades and it will absolutely deploy a panic response if you come at it with a plan and a timeline and a vision board and sage.

Just stay here. Hand on bone. Not fixing. Not healing. Not “releasing old energy.” Just… noticing that there are two layers. One is you. One is what your body built around you when it had no other option.

Breathe. Not deep… deep breaths in this moment make most people’s Amygdala think they’re being ambushed by a yoga teacher. Just normal. But WITH ATTENTION. Like you’re listening to something important.

And it is important. Your body is about to tell you something it’s been holding since before you had words for it. And the message is not complicated. The message has never been complicated.

The bone healed.

The cast can go.

You don’t have to know what comes next. You don’t have to have a plan for the version of you that exists without the armor. You don’t have to immediately become someone who makes eye contact with cashiers and takes full breaths and says “actually, no” without her jaw locking.

You just have to be willing to leave the page blank for a minute. To stand in the space between the old chapter and the new one without filling it with the next protection, the next structure, the next cast made of different material but built for the same reason.

The bone healed.

You’re still here.

That’s enough to start.
